Season looks lovely. That’s the first thing I can think to say about it. It’s mostly due to its visuals, but its premise is equally as evocative as the cel-shaded, Studio Ghibli-esque graphics.
Take a look at the Season reveal trailer below, and see for yourself.
Season is an upcoming title by the indie studio Scavengers that takes us on a journey through a beautiful, unchanging world. We’ll explore this world on our bicycle, collecting artifacts, documenting its ways, and capturing memories before a mysterious cataclysm washes everything away.
In the trailer, we can see our intrepid explorer recording sounds, taking pictures, and drawing the landmarks and people of this age. We will meet a cast of diverse characters on our journey, and discover an “unknown, yet familiar” new world hidden in plain sight.
Although it doesn’t really show in the trailer, Season takes place in a fantasy setting – a surreal version of the mid-20th century, where thousands of years have passed without any progress. But all that is about to change with the coming “collapse” – an apocalyptic event that happened at least once in the past. The game’s description mentions we will learn what caused the previous one, so maybe we’ll find a way to stop it from happening again.
My gut tells me that this is not a game about saving the world but about capturing and preserving beauty where you can find it, and accepting that change is inevitable for better or worse.
We’ll be able to experience Season’s chill, beautiful, and somewhat melancholic vibes on PlayStation 5 and PC. While Scavengers has been working on it for a few years now, we still don’t have a solid release date. Hopefully, it’ll be some time in 2021.
