They did it again! Sephiroth, one of the best villains in the Final Fantasy franchise, joins the Super Smash Bros. roster as a playable character. First announced at The Game Awards Show 2020, Sephiroth is the third character revealed for the Fighters Pass Vol 2. and will be playable later this month.

In the trailer, we see the characters struggling against Galeem, the main villain of the game. As it gets ready to shoot its ultimate attack on our heroes, Galeem is suddenly cut in half. You can see Sonic, Inkling girl, Banjo, and Kazooie shocked by the events when the iconic One-Winged Angel music track started to play and Sephiroth emerges.

With the ominous music played for the entire trailer, you can see some of Sephiroth’s attacks in Smash Bros. We can see his forward smash that has some serious range, a counter move that blocks Hero from Dragon Quest, 3 flames that surround an opponent once they attack Sephiroth, and an upward slashing attack that cuts the stage in half.

The trailer doesn’t end there. Cloud fights Sephiroth for the entire trailer and even use a presumably new smash attack: Omnislash ver. 5, the ultimate attack from the movie Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children. A reference to the original Final Fantasy 7 appears when Sephiroth (almost) stabs Mario in the same iconic way he stabs Cloud. You can see that Square Enix and Nintendo put a lot of effort into the trailer, and I hope the next characters will get the same treatment as well.

“We hope the numerous fans who watched The Game Awards were excited about the reveal that legendary character Sephiroth is joining the cast of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. I know at least one fan who was excited (it’s me).

We will get more information about Sephiroth in a special video dedicated to the upcoming fighter on December 17. the video should also reveal an official release date.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available on Nintendo Switch. Sephiroth will be included in the Fighter Pass Vol. 2 or as a standalone purchase.
