The Callisto Protocol was revealed during The Game Awards 2020 with a cinematic trailer. It’s the first game by Striking Distance Studios, a new studio formed by one of the creators of the original Dead Space.
The new title is a story-driven, single-player survival horror game set in 2320 on Jupiter’s moon Callisto. Though that’s not a lot to go on, the trailer does reveal a little bit more.
The Callisto Protocol takes place in a futuristic prison with poor lighting and a bad case of alien infestation. The creature we see in the trailer is an oozing humanoid with lots of teeth – even on its tongue. It could be an alien or perhaps a mutated human, but whatever it is, it’s very gross.
The trailer also hints at other dangers, like the malfunctioning prison security bots. They are big and look super unfriendly. I bet we’ll have to watch out for those too. Maybe we’ll be able to reprogram them to help us fight the icky alien scourge.
At this point, we don’t know much else about the game. We don’t even know who we’ll be playing as, but I think it’s safe to say it won’t be the character from the trailer.

The Callisto Protocol looks a lot like Dead Space. It is set in a dark, futuristic structure, there are weird aliens roaming around, and everything is trying to kill you. It also features the same type of in-game holo HUD. The green bar we see on the back of the prisoner’s neck looks very much like Isaac Clarke’s spinal health indicator.
The similarities between the two games aren’t all that surprising. Striking Distance Studios’ founder, Glen Schofield, is the creator and producer of the original Dead Space. The studio’s Chief development officer, Steve Papoutsis, ran Visceral Games when it developed Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3.
The Callisto Protocol is coming in 2022. In the mean time, you can visit the game’s official site in search for more information.
