After a long wait of nine years, fans will finally get a new James Bond game thanks to Hitman developer IO Interactive.
The new game, called Project 007, won’t be based on any of the movies. Instead, it will feature an original story. The developer released a short teaser video that is a cool take on the iconic James Bond movie’s starting sequence.
IO Interactive is collaborating closely with MGM studios and EON Productions (the ones running the 007 franchise at the moment). It has been a very long time since a good 007 game came out (I’m looking at you, GoldenEye, you sneaky bastard), and hopefully, Project 007 will be the fresh take the IP deserves.
“It’s true that once in a while, the stars do align in our industry,” said Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive. “Creating an original Bond game is a monumental undertaking and I truly believe that IO Interactive, working closely with our creative partners at EON and MGM, can deliver something extremely special for our players and communities. Our passionate team is excited to unleash their creativity into the iconic James Bond universe and craft the most ambitious game in the history of our studio.”
Judging by the quality of the recent Hitman games, I have no doubt IO Interactive has the capabilities to do the IP justice. This is a great sign, as most fans are still scarred from the 007 Legends incident. Project 007 will run on the studio’s Glacier engine, so it may be similar to the Hitman series in many ways.
The game announcement did not include a release date or launch platforms. All we know is that it is currently in development for next-gen consoles. Who knows, maybe Project 007 will arrive with the release of the 25th installment in the James Bond series, around April 2, 2021.
IO Interactive as are working on Hitman 3, which will hit the market on January 20, 2021.
