There’s a rumor going around claiming Sony will acquire Bluepoint Games.
In case you’re unfamiliar with the studio, they are the ones who brought us excellent remakes like Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Gravity Rush Remastered (one of my favorite games on the PS4 and Vita), and Shadow of the Colossus for the PS4. More recently, they release one of the most anticipated PlayStation 5 launch titles: Demon’s Souls.
With such a record of developing almost exclusively for the PlayStation consoles, it was only a matter of time until Sony will make a move.

Last week, a ResetEra user named MarsipanRumpan posted a rumor he heard that Sony and Bluepoint Games are close to finalizing a deal. In the post, MarsipanRumpan says that Demon’s Souls was Sony’s “final test” before deciding on the acquisition.
“Based on positive reactions, and the fact that Bluepoints work ethic has proven impressive once again Sony started acquisition-based talks with the studio,” they write.
It’s clear why Sony would want to buy the studio that made some of the best remakes and remasters on PlayStation 4. But what’s in it for Bluepoint Games (apart from ridiculous amounts of money)?
According to MarsipanRumpan, Sony and Bluepoint are already in a great partnership, but the devs might feel more secured as a first-party studio. It also seems that the studio wants to make an original IP, and Sony could provide the resources and platform for such a game.
Even if all of this is true, we won’t hear about the acquisition until February 28, 2021. So we’ll have to wait and see (or wait for a more trusted source to confirm the rumor).
Sony already purchased Insomniac Games for $229 million earlier this year, after Insomniac delivered a hit with Marvel’s Spider-man in 2018. And now they are working on a new PS5 exclusive in the Ratchet and Clank series.
