TombStar is a top-down “Space Western” shooter by the devs who created the populate mobile game Crossy Road.

The game features roguelike elements, bullet hell gunplay, and procedural levels. There are also the graphics, inspired by ’80s morning cartoons.

You control three gun-slinging renegades fighting against the Grimheart Gang. Each hero has a special power, though they all strafe in circles as in tradition in twin-stick, top-down shooters.

The game takes place in the TombStar star system in the Frontier Galaxy – a hive of scum and villainy full of pistol-wielding outlaws and robots with death lasers. You can see plenty of enemies in the TombStar reveal trailer above. We’ll hop between four distinct planets, each with their own grueling and bizarre alien landscapes.

In case you’re wondering what a “Space Western” is – think Cowboy Bebop, Firefly, and the Borderlands series. Some even consider Star Trek to be a Space Western. It’s a pretty neat subgenre of sci-fi, with plenty of tropes from which to draw. TombStar seems to take the literal “Cowboys in space” route and looks like a fun, action-packed romp.

The game is published by No More Robots, the same publisher who brought us Yes, Your Grace and Family Man. The indie publisher recently reported over $5 million in revenue, which is impressive.

TombStar will launch on PC and consoles in 2021. If you want to try it out before everyone else, you can sign up for the TombStar closed beta on Steam.
