There where many game trailers and announcements during the Future of Gaming presentation, where Sony revealed the PlayStation 5.

But somewhere between Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Resident Evil Village, and Horizon 2 Forbidden West, there was Project Athia – a new mysterious game developed by Square Enix.

Project Athia is the first title developed by Square Enix’s new studio, Luminous Productions. You’ll play as a nameless woman that has to deal with the challenges and dangers of a dark fantasy world. Her name might be Athia, but we can’t be certain.

Together with our protagonist, we’ll explore a beautiful world and some unnerving ruins crawled by fearsome and fire-some monsters. She seems out of place in this world, and not only because the teaser trailer specifically mentions it’s a “world not her own.” She appears to wear modern clothes (notice her shoes), so she might be trying to get back home.

Luckily for her, she has some very powerful powers and impressive athletic skills, as the teaser suggests. Whether her powers are innate or magically appeared when she arrived at this fantasy realm remains to be seen. From her hesitant and uncertain expressions in the trailer, I believe that the latter is more likely.

Feel free in learning every detail about Project Athia. According to the devs, the game is a “thrilling other-worldly adventure – it is going to be action-packed, and at times twisted, tempestuous, and forbidding. It is a journey that we want to feel as much yours as it is our protagonists.”

If you remember, way back in 2012, Square Enix released a tech demo called Agni’s Philosophy. At the time, it blew everyone’s mind, but even by today’s standards in looks pretty incredible. It seems that Project Athia is based on that demo. Both heroines look very similar, and both videos feature weird hyena monsters.

While developed to fully utilize PlayStation 5’s special capabilities, the game will be released on PC as well when the time comes.
