Frictional Games has revealed their horror game. It’s a sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent called Amnesia: Rebirth.
Rebirth is the studio’s next big project, the same project they continuously teased with a series of short videos and hidden messages. Now, Amnesia: Rebirth finally has a proper teaser trailer.
The Dark Descent reinvented the horror genre ten years ago, and Rebirth hopes to be the next “evolutionary leap.” It challenges players to remain calm in the face of unimaginable terror in a “new story set in the world of Amnesia.” We don’t know if it’s a direct sequel or just a spiritual one.
Amnesia: Rebirth is set in the desolate landscape of the Algerian desert. It will focus on Tasi Trianon as she goes on an expedition full of despair, psychological horror, and pain while exploring the “limits of human resilience.”
However, I’m still not sure we play as Tasi, or at least we don’t play just as Tasi. The trailer above mentions the name Cassandra, a name we’ve already seen in an encrypted message hidden on the game’s website. We could be playing as her.

The official press release mentions we are “retracing Tasi’s journey and pulling together the fragments of a shattered past.” Maybe we are experiencing Tasi’s story through Cassandra’s discoveries.
The same press release also includes this quote that hints at what playing Amnesia: Rebirth might feel like:
“You can’t let out a breath. The creature is only inches away. Its sole purpose – to feed off your terror. And so you crouch in the dark, trying to stop the fear rising, trying to silence what lies within you.”
But that’s not all. If you go through the press kit Frictional Games has assembled for journalists, you stumble on a folder named “Clues.” In it, there are two other folders – one labeled “???” and the other “via S576a.”
The first one only has one image in it. It shows what appears to be the bottom of an invoice, signed with the letter C. C for Cassandra. There’s also a symbol in the top right corner I don’t recognize.
The second folder, the one labeled “via S576a,” is full of image fragments that show… nothing in particular. But, if you take the time to use your very mediocre Photoshop skills, you can piece them all together into one image.
Don’t worry, I did that for you:

See? Very mediocre Photoshop skills. Unfortunately, the most important bit is still missing, so it still an image of pretty much nothing. We’ll have to wait for Frictional Games to release more information about their next game.
Amnesia: Rebirth will be released in fall 2020 on PC and PlayStation 4.
