Project Mara is a new experimental game by Ninja Theory. Just like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and its sequel Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 – this new title deals with mental illness. Or “True mental terror.”
According to studio head and creative lead Tameem Antoniades, Project Mara is all about the “horrors of the mind.”
It’s a grounded representation of mental terror, based on real-life experiences and accounts, and lots of in-depth research. Ninja Theory aims to recreate the horrors of the mind as accurately and realistically as possible.
The only real bit of solid information we have so far is how the game will feature only one character and one location. From the teaser trailer above, this character looks an awful lot like Senua, the protagonist of the Hellblade series. That’s probably because she is played by the same actress, and not because it’s a spin-off.
Since it is an experimental title, Project Mara isn’t something the studio is willing to elaborate on at this stage. However, we do know they intend to explore “new ways of storytelling” and create a “new storytelling medium.” So the game is going to be pretty heavy on the story, which is fine by me.
Ninja Theory is also working on the multiplayer brawler Bleeding Edge, Hellblade 2, and an innovative R&D project called The Insight Project.
We currently don’t know on which platforms Project Mara will be released, and when. Probably PC and the next-gen Xbox Series X.
