Red Barrels has revealed their next Outlast project – The Outlast Trials. It’s a 4-player co-op horror game set in the Cold War era.
In The Outlast Trials, players will face horrors, trials, and experiments by themselves or in groups of up to four players. We don’t know what kind of horrors, trials, and experiments we are in for, but knowing Red Barrels – they ain’t going to include sunshine and rainbows.

All we have to go on right now is a few words from Red Barrels co-founder David Chateauneuf, and this poster you see above.
Chateauneuf says that The Outlast Trials is out of the “proof of concept” phase, and the team is currently focused on “content creation, variety… and gore.” Sounds perfect.
The poster shows three test subjects wearing tattered clothes and standing in a dark room with the Murkoff Corporation logo behind them. It looks like night-vision goggles will replace the video camera from previous games, which makes sense. The Murkoff Corporation wouldn’t want anyone filming the nasty experiments it’s performing on human beings.
The Outlast Trials is the same Outlast project Red Barrels teased in October. As we suspected back then, this isn’t Outlast 3, but a spin-off set in the Outlast universe. We’re still very curious to see how the developers of Outlast will approach co-op in a horror game.
We don’t know on which platforms we can expect to play the game, but Outlast and Outlast 2 are available on PC and all consoles, so there’s no reason why this new game won’t be as well. Red Barrels promised more information “will be announced soon,” so we’ll just have to wait for now.
