It’s Halloween, which means everyone is in the mood for scary games. And you can’t get a lot scarier than the Outlast series by Red Barrels.

The developer posted an image of on their Twitter account, teasing that there’s an “Announcement coming soon.” The picture shows two hands as if one person is helping another get up. At the bottom, there a single line of text, reading “Where freedom ends.”

It could mean anything, really… Will the new game take place in a prison or detention camp? Are we talking about physical or spiritual freedom? Only Red Barrels know at this point.

However, if we look closely at the image, we can notice a metal bracelet with an engraving on the lower arm. It reads, “MK – 329300.” Again, no real idea what it means, though more than likely stands for Project MKUltra, the secret research project that was at the center of the original Outlast.

Some speculate that the two hands in the image indicate that the new Outlast game will feature some sort of co-op mechanic. While I’m not against it, co-op horror games have a history of being… less than scary. Still, it would be interesting to see how Red Barrels approach co-op.

While the teaser’s aesthetic undoubtedly hints at a new Outlast game, we’re not sure if that’s going to be Outlast 3, or a spin-off. Red Barrels said in the past they’re planning on making Outlast 3 “at some point.” However, now they’re focused on a standalone experience set in the Outlast universe – something their fans have been asking for.

Whatever this game turns out to be, I’m sure it’s going to be a terrifying ride. Outlast 2 was a great horror game, and I’m sure any sequel or spin-off would be just as good. Let’s hope we’ll hear more about it soon.
