The Church in the Darkness, an open-ended stealth game where you infiltrated a cult, is coming out on August 2.

Developed by indie studio Paranoid Productions, The Church in the Darkness puts you in the shoes of ex-cop Vic. Vic is on a mission to infiltrate the South American compound of Freedom Town, home to the Collective Justice Mission cult. He is there to find his nephew and bring him home.

It’s up to the player to unearth the cult’s motivations and plans, with every playthrough bringing a completely new experience. The Church in the Darkness highlights the mystery surrounding cults and how they are not always what they seem. Is this just a peaceful commune of people seeking to leave their materialistic lives behind, or is there something more sinister at work behind the scenes?

As Vic, you will sneak around Freedom Town undetected, and uncover the truth by chatting with members, searching cabins for clues and notes, and listening in on hushed conversations. Hopefully, the information you gather will help you locate and convenience your nephew Alex to leave without unnecessary bloodshed.

There are multiple endings for each scenario, and the one you’ll get is influenced by how stealthy or aggressive you chose (or forced) to be.

The compound is run by Rebecca and Isaac Walker, voiced by Ellen McClain and John Patrick Lowrie respectively. You may recognize McClain as the voice of GlaDOS from Portal, and Lowrie as Team Fortress 2’s Sniper (among other roles).

The Church in the Darkness launches August 2 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The game will be sold at a 20% discount on the first week of release, so if you’re into cults, stealth, and 70s-style facial hair, you’d want to consider getting in on the action early.
