Blacksad: Under the Skin is an upcoming narrative adventure based on a comic book series by the same name. You play as the titular John Blacksad, a private investigator who is also an anthropomorphic black cat.
As you can see and hear in the official story trailer below, the game follows the comic’s noir vibe. The art style is a bit more vibrant, but the characters, dialogue, and fisticuffs will fit right in any classic detective novel.
Blacksad: Under the Skin takes place in an alternate version of 1950’s New York City, where anthropomorphic animals replace humans. Joe Dunn, the owner of a boxing club, is found dead. Meanwhile, rising star Bobby Yale, due to take to the ring for the most important fight of his career, has mysteriously disappeared. Sonia Dunn, Joe’s daughter, hires Blacksad to track down Yale so that he can fight and earn the gym enough money to stay in business and play the Blacksad’s fees.
During his investigation, Blacksad will employ every tool in a private investigator’s belt: multiple-choice dialog, puzzle-solving, and quick time events. Depending on their decisions during the investigation, players will influence the relationships between Blacksad and the other characters as well as how the case is solved.
The game is developed by Pendulo Studios and YS Interactive. While this is the first title by YS Interactive as far as I can tell, Pendulo Studios are the ones behind the Runaway adventure game series, which I all heartily recommend you play if you’re a fan of the genre.
Alongside the story trailer, publisher Microïds has shared the details on Blacksad: Under the Skin’s collector edition. It will include the complete game, as well as an artbook and a Blacksad resin statue which you can see in the image above.
Blacksad: Under the Skin will be available on September 26, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It will be fully dubbed in English, French and Spanish and will also include subtitles in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Dutch.
