The top-down action roguelike Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is coming out of Early Access on January 31. Watch the trailer below to enjoy how the pixelated detective is blasting pixelated horrors with a shotgun.
In Lovecraft’s Untold Stories, you explore randomly-generated levels based on Lovecraft’s classic horror stories. You will also face some of the more iconic Great Old Ones, like Nyarlathotep, Shub-Niggurath and Cthulhu itself.
If you want to stand any chance against these terrifying entities (although let’s be real here – you won’t), you should gather knowledge about them. The more you explore, the more knowledge you can find, but you will also put your very sanity at risk. The game description mentions there are ways to gain back some sanity, so balancing between the two seems to be a core gameplay element.
You have a choice of five different characters, each with its own storyline and way of fighting the cosmic horrors. You can choose between a private detective, a witch, a thief, a professor, and a ghoul. According to the game’s official Steam page, the detective is the most balanced character, while the others all have their specialty. The Professor is about ranged combat and has a shield against attacks; the Witch deals plenty of damage with the power of the elements, and can also teleport; the Thief specializes in melee and can perform stealth attacks; the Ghoul is a powerhouse of health and melee damage, but cannot use health items at all.
If wondering around old Victorian mansions and abandoned hospitals, shooting and slicing at abominations doesn’t seem all that scary to you (after all, we’ve all played tons of Lovecraftian games), you’ll be glad to know you also face the colossal albino penguins from At the Mountains of Madness. They don’t pose any real threat, but if you choose to attack them – they scream; with human voices.
Once again, the full version of Lovecraft’s Untold Stories will be available on PC starting January 31.
