I love the Tt Games Lego series since I’ve played the original Lego Star Wars, and as a geek, I always enjoy exploring the various fandoms in the cute co-op action-adventure series.
It’s no surprise that I was happy to get my hands on a playable demo of Lego DC Super-Villains.
For a very long time, the Lego games had you play the hero. Now, they decided to mix it up and let you be the bad guy, because, well, bad guys are cool.
When you first start Lego DC Super-Villains, you will be asked to design your super-villain character. Lego games have had the option to create your character ever since Lego Star Wars 2, but this is the first time your custom build becomes an integral part of the story.
The devs explain that you will be able to customize your villain’s ability, and even unlock new and more powerful ones as you progress in the story. So far, this sounds a lot like what we had in previous games, but this time we are also able to choose the way the ability looks.
If you want your villain to be able to melt bricks, you can decide to have them shoot red beams from their eyes, a green laser from their hand, or a stream of bubbles coming from the tip of a sword.
The game begins with Lex Luthor, Mercy Graves and your character pulling off a daring escape from Stryker’s Island. However, this isn’t the level I got to play. The demo fast-forwards to a later level, Gorilla City, where we get to play as Lex Luthor, Captain Cold, Heat Wave, Cheetah, and the Reverse Flash as they invade the city to meet up with Gorilla Grodd.
While Lego games have remained quite similar to one another when it comes to gameplay mechanics, Lego DC Super-Villains introduces a new combat mechanic – grabs and throws. You can now grab enemies with your action button, punch them, dismantle them, or throw them on other enemies. It’s all enjoyable, especially since this makes for an easy way to perform special finishing moves on enemies.
The game introduces new characters to the Lego DC universe, with newcomers such as Calendar Man who can sing a happy birthday song, B’dg the Green Lantern squirrel, and Granny Goodness who can throw candy and has a gramophone and a rocket-powered walker.
Finally, we also get to see the Ventriloquist, which looks like the most interesting of them all. The Ventriloquist can move around as both the man and the puppet and can pull out a toy piano to play on.
Lego DC Super-Villains has also released some exciting details about the Season Pass. The Season Pass will include an impressive number of six level packs and four character packs. Two of the level packs will be levels based on the upcoming Aquaman movie, the next two will feature levels from the upcoming Shazam movie, with the final two packs based on Batman: The Animated Series and Young Justice TV series.
We also have learned more about the character packs. The first two level packs will feature characters from the CW’s Arrowverse, including characters from Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and even Black Lightning. I’m a huge fan of the CW TV series so I can’t wait to play as my favorite characters.
The final character pack that we currently know of is one based on characters from Justice League Dark.
The Lego games have always been one of my favorite ways of revisiting comic book worlds, and Lego DC Super-Villains is no different. There’s a tremendous amount of content to uncover throughout the game, and the little I saw made it all look very promising.
Lego DC Super-Villains will release on October 16, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Switch and PC. Try to think of a super-power in the meantime.
