The Fable series might not be dead after all.

There’s a new Fable game in development by Microsoft and Playground Games. That is if you believe the rumors, and we really, really want to believe the rumors.

According to a report by Eurogamer, Microsoft isn’t giving up on the franchise. Playground Games, known for the Forza Horizon series, will be developing a new game in the series. It could be Fable 4, or a different game set in the same universe, like the canceled Fable Legends.

The game is described as a “story and character-focussed open-world action RPG”, so it probably isn’t a reworking of Fable Legends. Definitely good news for fans of classic Fable.

There’s still time before we’ll get to play this new title. 200 people are currently working on the project, but it’s still in very early development, according to the rumor.

If you remember, Microsoft shattered Lionhead Studios about a year ago and stopped all development on the Fable franchise. So what happens? Well, according to sources, the success of the PlayStation 4-exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn has something to so with.

Guerrilla Games’ single-player open-world action RPG had sold over 3.4m copies as of June 2017, so naturally, Microsoft wants to try and tap into that market. The Fable franchise certainly a good fit for a new character and story-driven, open-world title.

This is the first non-racing game Playground Games is developing, so it will be interesting to see what they’ll do with the source material. As of now, this Fable game isn’t officially announced, so the whole thing might turn out to be nothing at all. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ll see Fable 4 at E3 later this year.
