The badly kept secret Assassin’s Creed Origins was officially announced and revealed on Microsoft’s E3 2017 stage. It has most of the rumors said it will have, and more stuff they didn’t.

First we got a trailer to set the mood. Origins will indeed take place in Ancient Egypt, which looks amazing by the way, and will tell of the original assassins. We will play as Bayek, a Medjay who protects his people from a false oracle.. He will be doing that with a combination of knives, swords, shields, spears and a falcon.

This is where the gameplay video comes in. After watching it for the first time, I quickly dismissed Origins to be “more of the same”. The basic gameplay is very familiar to anyone who followed the series in recent years. You can scale buildings, sneak in tall grass, stab people in the neck, etc. However, it seems like the newest Assassin’s Creed game has some hidden depth to it.

First, the level and skill systems from Syndicate are back, though they do appear to be more robust. You can also loot enemies for what looks like crafting materials and new, better weapons, so you aren’t stuck with the same 4 types of weapons for the whole game.

Bayek doesn’t seem to have the assassins’ trademarked Eagle-Vision used to highlight enemies. Instead, he relies on his falcon to tag enemies from above and reveal a little bit of information about them, like their level. It’s fairly similar to the owl in Far Cry Primal, though we’ve yet to see if the falcon can attack to distract enemies as well.

Towards the end of the video we see a little bit a combat, which looks to be more dynamic this time around. Guards don’t attack one at a time, and Bayek need to move around the area more in order to evade attacks and close in the distance between him and his enemies. We even get to see a skill in action, as Bayek guides an arrow into the neck of his fleeing target.

We’ll see more of Assassin’s Creed Origins on the Ubisoft E3 2017 stage soon, but there is already new information appearing online. I’ll gather it all up in a separate post for you later. Meanwhile, enjoy the Assassin’s Creed Origins gameplay video below.
