The Last of Us is getting a sequel, title The Last of Us Part 2 (and not The Last of Us 2). Part 2 will follow a somewhat older Joel and Ellie, as they hunt “every last one of them.” Who’s them? I’m not sure, but we do see a Fireflies symbol in the beginning of the reveal trailer video, so…

Creative Director Neil Druckmann has already confirmed that Ellie will be the main playable character, as this is her story. “Joel was the star in the first, Ellie is the star in this one,” said Druckmann. “Ellie plays differently from Joel.” (Thanks Kotaku).

Apart from Druckmann’s statement and the trailer above, we only know that Naughty Dog are still in the early days of the development process, and the game’s release day is “a ways off”. We will get more information about The Last of Us Part 2 in the coming months.

“Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, that wasn’t the case,” Neil Druckmann wrote on the PlayStation Blog. “We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m happy to see Joel and Ellie return. Until we’ll get a proper release date for The Last of Us Part 2 I’ll be listening to Ellie’s rendition of “Through The Valley” in loops.
