Frozen Synapse, a wonderful turn-based strategy game from 2011 by Headup Games, has had a sequel in development for a while. The latest trailer shows a range of new units, including melee and close-range ones, like flamethrowers, smoke grenades and mine layers.
In a press release on the game’s site, Mode 7 also tells us “[Frozen Synapse 2] will feature a vast procedurally generated city, where tactical encounters can occur within any building, or at any map location. AI factions will vie for control over the map, issuing contracts, taking on missions and engaging in diplomacy in just the same way as the player. Frozen Synapse 2 will also feature every multiplayer mode from the original game, with some new surprises.”
As it turns out, one of those “new surprises” is the new One Turn mode, where an entire battle is decided in the space of a single critical turn.
There is a little bit of bad news, though, as the game has been delayed until 2017. However, Mode 7 said “No, I won’t be surprised if you put this in a headline like ‘Frozen Synapse 2 unveils new units; delayed until 2017’. Frankly, I’m just delighted that anyone cares about when one of our games is coming out.”
Whilst it will be a little longer to wait for everyone who wants strategic action, Frozen Synapse 2 is being delayed to improve the game and make it better. How much better remains to be seen, but if the trailer is any indication, everyone is in for a good time. Or at the very least, strategy fans are in for a good time.
