Orcs Must Die!, following the open beta that started earlier this year, has issued a statement on all the community feedback. In a blog post, Robot Entertainment said “You may have noticed that we’ve been a little quiet lately. If you’ve been with us long enough, you know that being quiet usually means we’re thinking really, really, hard about something. In this case, we’ve been thinking really hard – and even arguing some – about a few big decisions to make for the game.”
These decisions culminate into one huge decision, really: the removal of Siege mode as of the next update. Robot said “Despite tremendous efforts, Siege PvP mode just hasn’t worked out … as some of the most passionate fans of Siege mode, it’s been difficult for us at Robot to come to terms with this feedback and data. Ultimately, the Siege game mode has a small hardcore group of players, but it isn’t building a healthy long-term community around itself.
“As the game has grown, Siege and Survival modes have competed with one another more and more for development resources. The need to balance the traps, heroes, and gear for both of these game modes and develop each in consideration with the other is holding them both back.”
Whilst some fans may be disappointed by this, the extra focus going into Survival and Endless mode, to recapture that Orcs Must Die! spirit, will definitely be worth it. Following on from this, an account reset will also be occurring, and Robot Entertainment warned that “All social connections – guilds, friend lists, friend referrals and their rewards – will remain intact, but any progress or content you earned through play will be reset so that all players can experience the new game equally.”
However, any players who log in within the first two weeks of the new update will receive additional gold valued at 5 EUR, so that’s something to look out for. Whilst it may not fully heal the sting of account erasures, it’s clearly a necessary decision that took a long time to come to.
Finally, Robot Entertainment stated that they will be running a stream, answering any burning questions you have on Tuesday September 20 at 9PM BST, so head here at that time to ask anything you need to know.
