Konami has unveiled the next game in the Metal Gear franchise to be Metal Gear Survive – an online, four player co-op, stealth-action hybrid with zombies.

The game is set in an alternative timeline to that of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. It seems like the split occurs right after the conclusion of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, when a group of soldiers stationed at Mother Base are sucked through glowing blue wormhole in the sky and arrive and a future where The Phantom Pain never happened.

From the point on, the soldiers must work and fight together to survive a desolate wasteland full of zombies with red horns sticking out of their faces. They are described as a “living biological threat”. The team will have an assortment of new weapons to deal with the new threat, which seem to include bows, knives on sticks and good-old-fashioned shotguns.

According to Konami, Metal Gear Survive “takes a divergent look at familiar Metal Gear themes and pursues a fresh spirit of exploration in unique gameplay mechanics”.

I’m not sure how I feel about zombies and other supernatural creatures in a Metal Gear game, but if we’ll get an open sandbox akin to that of The Phantom Pain, it should be fun to explore with a team of friends.

Metal Gear Survive, the first Metal Gear game without Hideo Kojima, is coming to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2017. The game’s debut trailer above is courtesy of IGN.
