In case you were wondering – no, you don’t need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription to play No Man’s Sky online. You only need a PlayStation 4, an Internet connection and a copy of the game.

Hello Games believe that since their game is so massive, the chances of you encountering another human being are very slim, so it can’t qualify as a multiplayer game. The only thing playing online really does is registering all your discoveries in the universal atlas, so if someone stumbles across a planet you were the first to discover, they will know it.

“PS Plus won’t be a requirement to play online, however you will need to connected to the internet for your discoveries to register with the universal atlas,” a Sony representitve confirmed to Game Informer.

Of course, you can play the entire game offline if you want, thus making sure no human will ruin your space exploration experience when No Man’s Sky is released on August 9 on PC and PlayStation 4.
