Celebrating 25 years of Sonic the Hedgehog at the San Diego Comic Con, Sega took it upon themselves to announce 2 brand-new Sonic games coming in 2017. The first of these is titled Sonic Mania, and is a love letter to the old 2D Sonic games – the trailer shows a fast-paced, wildly colorful re-imagining of the first three games, complete with some new zones and the ‘drop dash’, a new move to help Sonic reach ever faster speeds.

Sonic Mania will be released for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in Spring 2017.

The other game Sega announced was only called Project Sonic and featured a heavily dystopian world where it seems that something catastrophic has happened, most likely fronted by the diabolic Dr. Eggman as we can see several gigantic robots. Splitting off from the Boom franchise, this trailer shows off Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic working together, possibly suggesting Sonic Generations 2 or perhaps just a new game, as the ending gives us just one phrase: ‘join the resistance.’

Project Sonic will be released in holiday 2017 for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the NX.
