Resident Evil 7 was announced during Sony’s E3 press conference earlier today. Well, it’s a horror game bearing the Resident Evil IP, but whether it shares the themes that defined the franchise, or offers something completely new, remains to be seen.
The announcement came through a short gameplay demo, focusing mostly on atmosphere and creepiness. As we can see, the new Resident Evil game will be played from the first-person view, and will feature photorealistic graphics thanks to a completely new engine. No zombies appear during this demo, nor do we see anything associated with the RE universe. In fact, without the Resident Evil 7 logo at the end, I would never have guessed it belongs to the same franchise.
Capcom did promise to take the series back to its horror roots – a promise they aim to keep. RE7 seem to focus less on the undead and more on exploration and tense atmosphere. If you want to judge for yourself, you can already play and download the Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour demo, if you have a PS Plus subscription.
In the new standalone teaser demo, the player awakens inside a dilapidated cottage on an ominous plantation mansion. A phone call urges you to get out immediately or you will die. From what I’ve seen so far, I wouldn’t be surprised is Beginning Hour is to Resident Evil 7 what P.T. was to Silent Hills – a standalone experience that has little to do with the actual game.
Resident Evil 7 is scheduled to release on January 24, on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
