Fans were expecting the world reveal of Battlefield 5 today, but instead we got Battlefield 1 – a new title that takes the series into World War 1. Watch the reveal trailer above for in-engine footage of trench warfare, biplanes and men on horseback fighting against tanks.

Not many video games have explored World War 1, so it would definitely be interesting to see how the veteran franchise will tackle that. We know there will be period-appropriate weapons like single-shot rifles, early machine guns and flamethrowers, but there’s also a focus on melee weapon, as soldiers often fought in very close quarters. There will be light and heavy melee weapons, such as maces, shovels and swords.

The vehicles in Battlefield 1 will be some of the largest DICE has ever done, and will include tanks, biplanes and hopefully zeppelins. These will undoubtedly be fun to use in the game’s 64-player multiplayer mode.

According to developer DICE, Battlefield 1 will give players the sensation of a global war by having them visit multiple battlefield during the single-player campaign and the multiplayer maps.

Those who attend the EA Play event during E3 2016 next month, will get a chance to get some hands-on time with Battlefield 1. In the meantime, you can sign up as a Battlefield Insider to receive more information on the coming beta.

Battlefield 1 will be available worldwide on October 21 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Pre-ordering the Early Enlister Deluxe Edition for $79.99 will grant you early access to the game on October 18, as well as a lot more other stuff like extra vehicles, weapons and emblems included in the Red Baron and Lawrence of Arabia packs.
