If you’ve been playing WoW from the last few years, Vanilla Wow and Legacy Wow are probably terms you’ve become quite familiar with. Especially lately, after Blizzard decided to shut down the biggest privately hosted vanilla World of Warcraft server for legal reasons over copyright issues.

Earlier this week Blizzard broke radio silence with a forum post detailing that the company sticks by its decision to shut down the server. “Why not just let Nostalrius continue the way it was? The honest answer is, failure to protect against intellectual property infringement would damage Blizzard’s rights”, the post reads.

However, there is still a sliver of hope for players wishing to play Legacy WoW. “We’ve recently been in contact with some of the folks who operated Nostalrius,” Blizzard added. “They obviously care deeply about the game, and we look forward to more conversations with them in the coming weeks.”

This post came in the wake of  a recent petition that gathered over 240,000 unique signatures, asking Blizzard to provide the WoW community with official Legacy servers.

It wasn’t clear just how serious Blizzard was being with this though, until yesterday when the Nostalrius team tweeted that they have been invited to Blizzard HQ for a meeting and will have an announcement this weekend. It may just be a “no hard feelings” type meeting, or it could be discussing legitimate ways of hosting Legacy servers.

Only time will tell. Exciting news indeed and I’m sure we have not heard the last of this Vanilla and Legacy server uproar from the community.
