The computer and software developers at IBM Japan have announced that they are looking for beta testers for their upcoming virtual reality MMO – Sword Art Online: The Beginning. This stunning VR recreation of the famous series is done in collaboration with Bandai Namco, Kadokawa, Aniplex and others.

The trailer doesn’t reveal anything about how the game will be played, or much of anything at all for that matter. It Most shows montages of dramatic clips from the original anime, and concludes with the recreated 3D model of the anime’s main marketplace, as well as some enemy character models.

Thanks to a translation by Dualshockers, we know that the project is still a very small affair at this point, as the beta test itself is only a 2 day event between March 18-20, and closed to only 208 testers from the local Tokyo area.

A gigantic computer company is making a virtual reality MMO based on a series where gamers were held hostage inside of the exact same virtual game by another gigantic computer company. The irony is not lost on us. However, gamers can hopefully look forward to having IBM hold them hostage in a virtual MMO very soon.
