Hideo Kojima, the celebrated and venerated creator of the Metal Gear franchise, has announced in a recent interview that he wants his new project to go beyond gaming and reach other media.

In an interview with GameSpot, Kojima said that with Sony, he’s “working on a project that will be a new IP”. He wants this new project to have a big impact, enough to become its own series. From what he said, it seems that he wants the characters of the game to be influential in the creative industries – namely, anime, manga and figures – but he doesn’t have any idea how popular it will become.

Kojima has a fascination with the industries surrounding games, especially film and action figures, so it’s only natural that he’d want his own projects to take the same route. After leaving Konami, Kojima says he feels “very free”, most likely because he’s gone indie and isn’t worried about a big company breathing down his neck.

Let’s just hope if a movie does come of his brand new IP, it doesn’t suffer the video game movie curse.
