There a good change The Legend of Zelda Wii U won’t be released in 2016, or even on the Wii U.

Nintendo have been working on the newest Legend of Zelda title for quite some time, and they had originally slated it for a 2015 release. In March, they had a different story to tell, stating that making the 2015 release window wasn’t “a number one priority” for the development team.

According to Nintendo’s financial report, however, while Legend of Zelda Wii U is listed under 2016 releases, it also has a TBD marker. Does this mean the game won’t be released in 2016? No, but a “To Be Determined” leaves a lot of room for speculation.

A 2017 release date wouldn’t be the end of the world. In fact, it could mean that Zelda Wii U is not longer being developed for the Wii U, but instead being developed for the Nintendo NX, making it Zelda NX.

Unfortunately, without any official statements, this is all just a theory. It could just be that the game is taking longer to develop, as Eiji Aonuma, the game’s producer, has stated that the entire team desires this next entry in the legendary series to be a “complete and ultimate Zelda game.”

As a long-time die-hard fan of The Legend of Zelda myself, I can say without question that I’m happy to wait as long as it takes to get that perfect game, though I’d also be plenty happy if they were able to release the perfect version sooner too.
