Yesterday, Sony announced that Shenmue 3 would be put in the hands of the fans and that a Kickstarter project would be started shortly after the reveal. Here it is in case you missed it:

Yu Suzuki, Shenmue 1 and 2’s creator, stated that he is frequently asked what was happening with a sequel and that he’d been searching for the best way to go about it. After seeing the results of Kickstarters across the board, he decided that Shenmue 3 would best be funded under that system. This was met with cheers but even better yet, as of this morning, the goal amount needed, two million dollars, was reached under 24 hours. With thirty days left before funding is provided, the Shenmue team is hoping that stretch goals will allow them to make the third game even more well-rounded and complete including but not limited to Cinema Shorts from Shenmue 1 + 2, Subtitles for different languages, Skill Tree system, additional mini games, etc.

Shenmue 3 is set for release on PC and PlayStation 4.
