Respawn Entertainment has decided to release Titanfall 2, the sequel to its breakout hit Titanfall, on multiple platforms and not as an Xbox exclusive as the first title in the series was.

CEO of Respawn Vince Zampella spoke to IGN at the BAFTA Game Awards, and was able to confirm that not only is Titanfall 2 currently in development, but it will be available on the PS4 this time around. However, there has been no confirmation of a release on any previous-gen consoles.

“So we’re working on a sequel. No official name yet, but we’re working on that,” Zampella confirmed. “That’s the main focus but we’re starting up a second team and doing some smaller stuff too. Small, exploratory, taking it slow! It’ll be multiplatform.”

Talking about the original Titanfall, Respawn COO Dusty Welch said that if given the chance to do anything differently, the game would have been a multiplatform title. “The opportunity to be multiplatform could have made it even more significant for us,” he mused.

This decision represents much more than just one company’s thoughts on the idea of console exclusivity. This is a developer commenting on the dwindling popularity of the genre that could end up having a domino effect on the rest of the industry as well. Titanfall was indeed very successful, but studios may be losing out on a lot of money in the effort to maintain console loyalty.
