Independent developers are always looking for the most cost effective ways to bring their original work to life. Epic Games, the studio behind the famous Unreal Engine, realizes this and now allow developers to use the new Unreal Engine 4 for absolutely free.

Before today, developing your own game meant either creating your own engine or paying a licensing fee for top notch software to run your latest creation. For instance, the Unreal Engine used to cost $19 a month in subscription fees in order to download the development software. Similarly, Unity and the CryEngine also had their own competitive prices.

However, Epic took things one step further and has officially announced that UE4 is free to use.

“You can download the engine and use it for everything from game development, education, architecture, and visualization to VR, film and animation,” Epic’s Tim Sweeney stated. “When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter. It’s a simple arrangement in which we succeed only when you succeed.”

It appears Epic is making strides to not only diversify gaming development, but help other studios achieve success, while only taking a little bit of cash on the side. Now it’s the perfect time to sit down and finally make that game you’ve always through about doing. Do it now!
