2K Games and Firaxis have announced Sid Meier’s Starships, a new strategy and space combat game set in the same universe as Civilization: Beyond Earth. With the announcement came a cinematic trailer that tells of the events between the two games, and sets the stage for what waits beyond the stars.

According to Firaxis, Starships will let players command a fleet of starships as it embarks on missions to protect other planets and civilizations, and eventually form a federation of planets and bring about a new age of peace throughout the galaxy. All that will be possible with turn-based tactical space combat.

Players will also be able to customize their armada. research new technologies and engage in dynamically generated combat missions that will expend the game’s replay-ability.

“When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth. What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth?” said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. “My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration.”

2K also promises some sort of cross-connectivity between Civilization: Beyond Earth and Starships, though it is still unclear how it will be implemented in the new title.

Sid Meier’s Starships will be released on PC and iOS devices in early 2015.
