Ghost Games, the studio behind Need for Speed: Rivals, has suffered layoffs in its UK offices, and all development on an unannounced Need for Speed title has stopped.

According to a report by Polygon, EA has sent all contract employees home, and presented full-time staff members with a choice: either take compensation and leave, or stay and help Visceral Games with a new Battlefield game codenamed Havana. Havana is rumored to be a police shooter rather than a military one, that is due for the end of 2014.

Ghost Games has taken over the Need for Speed franchise when Criterion Games moved on to work on a new IP. If the report is true, then the future of the veteran racing series is unclear, bordering on bleak.
