Head of Microsoft Studios, Phil Spencer, talked to Japanese magazine Famitsu about the possibility of bringing the Gears of War franchise to next generation consoles, specifically the Xbox One.
“Gears of War is developed by Epic Games, and they’ve been our partners for a long time on Xbox 360,” Spencer said. “You should ask Epic Games about what they want to do. We haven’t announced anything yet about Gears of War, but we hope to bring it to Xbox One in some form. However, there’s nothing more I can tell you at this time.”
An odd statement. Then again, most of the original talent who worked on the Gear of War series is no longer with Epic Games. Series creator and design director Cliff Bleszinski has left the studio a year ago, and director of production Rod Fergusson departed a few months earlier.
People Can Fly, the Polish studio behind the Gears of War: Judgment spin-off, also suffered a few “casualties” last year. A group of devs left the studio to start their own indie studio and work on a new horror title, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
So the fate of Gears of War remains a mystery, but hey – just ring up Epic Games and ask them!
