We sat through the presentation of NBA 2K14 here at Gamescom 2014, and boy – if you think NBA 2K13 has squeezed out every drop of gameplay out of the basketball, you are sorely mistaken.
This year, the cover athlete of the game is none other than James LeBron, who is considered by many to be the best player of our generation. Lebron is deeply involved in the production of NBA 2K14, and does the in-game instruction for different game modes. He even chose the game’s soundtrack himself.
The presentation focused of Path to Greatness, NBA 2K14 “story” campaign mode. In it, players follow LeBron on his path to the NBA’s hall of fame. The interesting part is that this mode takes place in the near future, and you’re basically playing a version of “what can happen.” The match at the start of the campaign takes place in January 2014, and the league itself can change depending on your victories and defeats. Path to Greatness spans about seven years.
The most exciting news, however, are the addition of Euroleague teams to the game for the very first time. 2K Sports are including 14 teams for the Euroleague, such as Real Madrid, Olympiacos and Maccabi Tel Aviv (a little Israeli pride). Euroleague teams can compete among themselves or against NBA teams. European games follow the Euroleague rules, and AMerican games follow the NBA rules.
Unfortunately, 2K Sports refused to talk about the new features in My Player mode, but promised there is still a lot more to come. We sure hope so.
NBA 2K14 won GamersPack’s “Choice of the Pack” award for best sports game at Gamescom 2013.
The game is out on the Xbox 360 and PS3 this October. The Xbox One and PS4 will get their version in November, after they launch. Still no concrete release date for the PC version tough.
