Microsoft has announced a new Halo game for Windows 8 devices, titled Halo: Spartan Assault.

This new top-down action shooter is developed by 343 Industries in collaboration with Vanguard Games, and provides “an accessible, pick-up-and-play experience for fans and newcomers alike.”

Spartan Assault is set between the events of Halo 3 and Halo 4, and tells the story of either Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis (depending on which you choose to play as) as they traverse the first missions of the Spartan Ops program and fight against Covenant forces.

As a top-down shooter, the gameplay seems pretty straightforward, with touch and console-like controls or keyboard and mouse for the PC crowd. You can see the game in action in the trailer below.

Halo: Spartan Assault will be released this July exclusively on Windows 8 PCs, tablets and other Windows Phone 8 devices, for the price of $6.99 (excluding in-app purchases of course).
