Disney has signed an exclusive deal with Electronic Arts, giving the publisher the rights to develop and publish “core” Star Wars games. EA has already announced that DICE (Battlefield) and Visceral Games (Dead Space) will be adding to the popular sci-fi franchise in the future.

Bioware will also continue working on Star Wars: The Old Republic and other Star Wars games.

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

As part of the deal, Disney (that recently shut down LucasArts) will retain the rights to develop and publish Star Wars games for the mobile, social, tablet and online categories (as to was expected).
