You all remember the rumors about Valve Software building its very own console, right? Well, it’s time to put that rumor to bed, and let all of the pent up excitement out (or breathe a sigh of relief if you are Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo).
Doug Lombardi, Valve’s marketing director told Kotaku that the company isn’t working on any new hardware at this point. “We’re prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we’re building boxes to test that on. We’re also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we’ve talked about a fair amount.”
This “Big Picture Mode UI” is designed to make Steam work better for users who have a television set as a display, and the “biometric feedback stuff” was rumored to be integrated into the Steam Box controller. “All of that is stuff that we’re working on, but it’s a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware.”
However, Lombardi refused to completely deny Valve is working on any type of new gaming console, so if you are the dreaming type, it wouldn’t hurt to hold on to your hopes a little while longer.
